In the second half of the 2020s — due to the nearly simultaneous eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull and its immediate neighbors — an ash cloud spread over the craters, blanketing not only the surrounding landscape but soon darkening the skies over half of Europe.

The rage of this volcano activated its significant nearby counterparts, Hekla and Katla, resulting in earthquakes, mudslides, and tsunamis, forcing the citizens of the island nation's southeastern region to flee their homes in an instant.

Europe had hardly recovered from the first shock when the events in Iceland were followed by a giant eruption of Mount Etna in Sicily less than a week and a half later. Under the influence of the ash clouds, a radical climate shift occurred across the continent; the average temperature dropped by five degrees Celsius, and the start of the cold season shifted months earlier.

The Minor Ice Age arrived in our free Hungarian homeland as well.

Children molded snowmen from October snow, skating rinks opened on the Danube, and constant flight restrictions made major travel impossible. In this cataclysm, societies that had seemingly settled for eternity were shaken, as was human consciousness itself; yet, despite this — or perhaps because of it — the inhabitants of Europe began to draw closer, huddling together as the life of micro-communities became more intimate and refined... The continent’s reproducing culture, which had seemed almost incapable of creating anything new, appeared to teem with life once more.

The shaken European value system found new pillars. Crumbs of religion and fragments of culture forged into unity again. Amidst the wreckage of a declining civilization, new life stirred... Apparently. But the worst is yet to come.
